In addition to his general surgery practice with SMC Health Physicians, Dr. Daniel Timmerman is in his final year at Widener University’s Delaware Law School. Dr. Timmerman previously earned his Master of Public Health degree. As a result of his educational background and interests, Dr. Timmerman — along with John Culhane, JD — has developed a blog entitled “Public Health Law and Policy in the Time of COVID-19.”
In the blog’s intro, Dr. Timmerman explains the blog was created in hopes of provoking “discussion relevant to the coronavirus pandemic, the present quarantine, and whether and to what extent public health benefits should displace individual liberties.”
Current posts include “Understanding the Science Behind the Policy: Defending the New Normal,” “Nursing Homes in the Time of COVID-19: Is Quarantine Protecting the Vulnerable?,” “Quarantine Lite,” “The Side Effects of Quarantine Policy,” and “Protest in the Time of Quarantine: Balancing Public Health Goals.”
In “Nursing Homes in the Times of COVID-19,” Dr. Timmerman examines the question, “How can we claim to be protecting our most vulnerable in this time of quarantine and yet be faced with the fact those individuals are — and have been — dying of infectious diseases in the largest numbers?”
“Quarantine Lite” discusses the COVID-19 version of quarantine including the delicate balance between public health and civil liberties.
