Paul Kouyoumdji, MD, has been a fixture in the Salem County community for so long that he’s now seeing his next generation of patients come through the doors.
“The kids that I took care of are coming back with their kids,” he said. “Some of the babies that I took care of are now moms and dads. It’s neat to see them come back. It’s full circle.”
Dr. Paul, as he’s fondly known to his patients and friends, was recently named Best Pediatrician in Salem County, and feels honored for the recognition.
“It feels good to be appreciated for what you’ve done; that people recognize the effort and work and values that we bring to our patients,” he said.
Since 1996, Dr. Paul has been providing comprehensive pediatric care for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults in Salem County and the surrounding area.
Of all the medical fields he could have pursued, he said he went into pediatrics because it’s an “optimistic field.”
“Taking care of kids and families – I find it very rewarding,” said Dr. Paul. “Usually, you’re dealing with happy things in life; families starting, having babies, kids growing up and seeing them mature through early childhood, preschool, school and adolescence.”
While it is a rewarding field, Dr. Paul said it’s also a big responsibility.
“I’m honored and thankful for the trust of my patients and their families. To put your kid’s life in somebody’s hands, you have to trust them.”
However, he doesn’t take all the credit for being named Best Pediatrician.
“It reflects not just on me, but also on the staff,” said Dr. Paul. “It’s a team sport. It’s not solo. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without a dedicated staff. Day in and day out, I have a very good staff and that’s why we’re going to go and celebrate together.”
Annemarie Halstead, pediatrics office manager, has worked with Dr. Paul for 23 years and believes the doctor epitomizes professionalism.
“He knows his families well and is readily available to meet their needs,” she said.
In addition to a long history, she and Dr. Paul share the same passion – delivering high-quality care to the families they serve.
“I’m pleased he has been recognized and wish him many more years of success,” she said. “I’m honored to have shared this journey. We’re family.”
Dr. Paul completed a pediatric residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. He earned a medical degree from St. Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon.
He was recognized by his peers as a Top Doctor in pediatrics by US News and World Report, and Inside New Jersey Magazine for several years running.
The Best of Salem County contest is sponsored by the Salem County Chamber of Commerce, South Jersey Times newspaper and Salem Community College. Each year, the community is asked to vote for their favorite choices in 12 categories. This year, there were more than 4,000 voters.
