Immediately following the Armistice on Nov. 11, 1918, a group of concerned citizens spearheaded the drive to establish a much-needed hospital for the people of Salem County.
After an intense fundraising campaign, the Ford’s Hotel on Market Street in Salem was purchased and remodeled.
When Salem County Memorial Hospital first opened its doors in 1919, the staff consisted of only 12 physicians, four nurses, an orderly, a cook, a matron, and a board of trustees made up of people from the community.
