SMC’s Echocardiography lab recently received a three-year accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission.
The accreditation covers the areas of Adult Transesophageal, Adult Stress, and Adult Transthoracic Echo, and demonstrates the lab’s ongoing commitment to providing quality patient care in echocardiography.
“Echocardiography is an important and technically challenging test that is very technologist dependent,” said Acting Technical Director for the Stress/Echo Department Heather Dierickx, RDCS, RVT. “IAC accreditation is the industry’s ‘seal of approval’ that shows our staff is dedicated to quality and improvement for the testing our facility provides.”
John Roselli, Director of the Cardio Pulmonary Department, said this accreditation shows that SMC is committed to meeting the strenuous standards of IAC.
“I would like to thank Heather, our Medical Director Manish Dadhania, and the entire Stress/Echo staff for their hard work in getting this accomplished,” Roselli said.
Echocardiography is used to assess different areas of the heart and can detect heart disease or signs of serious conditions. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the American Heart Association.
“IAC accreditation is an intense application and review process overlooking the studies we perform,” Dierickx said. “It shows that our lab demonstrates consistency and correlation to other testing which ensures patients are getting quality tests for diagnostic purposes.”
Many factors contribute to an accurate diagnosis based on echocardiography including the training and experience of the sonographer, the type of equipment used, and the quality of the assessment metrics each facility is required to measure.
“IAC accreditation is a widely respected mark of quality in the medical community,” Dierickx said. “Accreditation means our doctors and patients can rely on our images to accurately diagnose patients and ensure they receive the best treatment possible.”
