While much of the world is beginning to open up, there are still some people stuck working from home or those who are not getting out due to the remaining restrictions.
FOX Rehabilitation Director Scott Laraus said there are simple ways to stay active and healthy while at home.
“If you’re working from home, walk around the house while on phone calls or use a standing desk while working on the computer,” he said.
Take “movement breaks” throughout the day. Stretching, walking, or jogging can do wonders to help your physical as well as mental health.
“Join your children for some outside fun, and get your pets involved,” Laraus said. “Take your dog for a walk or throw a ball around in the yard. It can be enjoyable for you and your pup.”
Household chores can also be turned into workouts.
“Make vacuuming, mowing the lawn, or pulling weeds a time to focus on your physical well-being,” he said. “Use your stairs as a Stairmaster or use canned vegetables as light hand weights.”
Many gyms that are closed due to the COVID-19 are offering online workouts and tips for working out at home. Also, be creative and come up with a custom workout that includes dancing, marching in place, or other unique movements that are perfect for you.
Using the buddy system through email or video chat can make staying active during stay-at-home orders more manageable.
“Have a friendly competition with your friends using an exercise video chat,” he said. “Exercise is important and will assist with not only your physical but your mental well-being.”
