Bruce W. Herdman, PhD, MBA, has been Chief of Medical Operations at the Philadelphia Department of Prisons since 2006. He is responsible for the delivery and the quality of medical, behavioral health, and dental services provided to more than 30,000 inmates annually at the prison and in the community.
Prior to joining the Philadelphia Department of Prisons, Dr. Herdman served as Executive Director of the Mayor’s Commission on Health in Philadelphia, Senior Vice President for Psychiatric Services at Pennsylvania Hospital, Vice President for Risk Arrangements and Ancillary Services at Independence Blue Cross, and Senior Vice President of Provider Network Management at Keystone Mercy Health Plan.
In addition to SMC, Dr. Herdman also served on the boards federally qualified health centers, health care foundations, and hospitals.
Dr. Herdman earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1969, served as an officer in the United States Coast Guard from 1969 to 1973, earned an MBA in Health Care Administration in 1975, a Masters in Management in 1980, and a PhD in Economics in 1981 from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
